《The Moment of Everything》by Shelly King

"The librarians I knew were superheroes of data. Like the Old World explorers, they navigated uncharted oceans of information, drawing maps to get anyone anywhere. And they were the keepers of things other people forgot, archiving the incidents of life and piecing them together."

"The thing with used books is that they bring their pasts with them. They haven't just popped off a printer's press and then stacked themselves in a box to be sent to a store. They are abandoned here by people who no longer want them. Orphans in a Dickens novel. They are discarded as people move on with their lives. They're too heavy to move or they take up too much space. That's how they end up here. We have to release them of their former lives so they can move on to who do want them."

"Are we waiting for our most perfect selves, for all our scars to disappear, for the rearrangement of time and science to erase our defects? With more time before we meet, will we be able to excavate greater kindnesses or contentments from our souls? No, it is not for our perfections that we are loved. It is our imperfections that make us more worthy of love."

"The heartbeat that separated the time when Dizzy was my best friend from the time when he wasn't. And it took the two of us dressing up like people we weren't for me to see it. He would go to Portland and I would stay here. We'd text, we'd video chat, and I would love him forever. But we'd never be as we once were."

"I liked being alone. But I did not like being lonely."

"I worry a little for all of them. But then, which of us are ever really ready for anything?"

Some thoughts after reading:
There is no happy ending in this book. Henry and Catherine aren't together in the end, neither do Maggie and Rajhit. But who can define what kind of ending is a "happy" ending? Life goes on. It's not perfect, but it's real, whether you like it or not. Maybe it's already the best ending for everyone in the book.
